About the League of Women Voters

The mission of the League of Women Voters is:

to encourage the informed and active participation of all citizens in government,

to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and, to influence public policy through education and advocacy.

The League of Women Voters is a non- partisan, non-profit, grassroots, volunteer organization that functions on three levels: local, state, and national.

First, it is about increasing citizen participation in government through voter education and many other forums that the League creates to expand civic education and knowledge about how government should work and how it should not work.

This could include learning about the legislative process on the local, state or national level, learning how a bill becomes a law, or learning how to intelligently assess political candidates who are running for a public office. It also could include non-partisan information about candidates for a particular election.

Second, It is about study, consensus, position development and advocacy. It is about helping League members study issues that are important to them, so that they have all of the information needed to know the issues thoroughly and lobby effectively. League methods of involving their local League members in the balanced research, study and discussion of all points of view of important public issues leads to the formulation of League positions based on member consensus. It is from these well thought-out positions that League members at all three levels then advocate to influence public policy through legislation and or regulation.
