Q. Who makes and distributes the new voting machines? Diebold is the manufacturer of the optical scan machine used in CT. LHS is the distributor of the machines. Think of it similar to purchasing a car, where for example, Ford manufactures the cars and a local dealer sells them. Although vulnerabilities have been identified with voting machines manufactured by Diebold and others, the Office of the Secretary of the State has established a formal partnership with the University of Connecticut Department of Computer Science which continues to assist in the development of physical custody procedures and other safeguards to address identified vulnerabilities. Additionally, it's important to keep in mind that unlike many states, CT passed legislation during the 2007 session that requires mandatory, random, post-elections audits of results to ensure the integrity of the elections. 8/20/07 |
