Watching Out for the Environment
Linking Land Use to Water Quality
Impervious surfaces collect and direct polluted run-off into our water resources thus hastening their degradation. Mr. Chester Arnold, a leading land-use and water quality educator of the University of Connecticut's Cooperative Extension System, will present a multimedia lecture-discussion focused on methods to reduce non-point source pollution, the #1 water quality problem on the USA today. This workshop investigates the relationship between impervious surfaces, urbanization and water quality. Components of the impervious landscape (e.g., sidewalks, roads, roofs and parking lots) are identified along with site design tips on how to mitigate their water resource impacts. Interested participants may include P&Z and Conservation commissioners, land use planners, municipals Public Works and Engineering staff, site designers, landscape architects, developers and paving companies.
Land Use in Norwalk covers a wide range of committees and commissions, and Environment Committee co-chairmen Louise Golub and Diane Lauricella are looking for Leaguers who will attend monthly or bimonthly meetings as observers.
Diane and Louise will train volunteers able to attend meetings of any of the following:
- Planning Commission
- Zoning Commission
- Conservation Commission
- Oak Hills Authority
- Common Council's Parks and Recreation Committee
- Common Council's Department of Public Works Committee
- Harbor Commission
