Announcements
The LWVCT CT ended its fiscal year $1,684.87 to the good. This was almost entirely due to higher-than-budgeted interest income; reduced donations were offset by reduced expenditures.
League Leadership Dinner
The date for the 2009 Leadership Dinner (formerly known as the Presidents’/Boards’ dinner) is Thursday, September 17, and we will be trying out a new venue: The Courtyard by Marriott, just off Route 8 in Shelton. All League presidents and board members are invited to attend. We will be scheduling workshops in various aspects of League work – watch future Board Reports for details.
90th Anniversary Activities Historical Materials Available?
Many of you got our e-mail reporting that the LWVCT has been given the opportunity to line the walls of the corridor between the state Capitol and the Legislative Office Building next January with photos and documents giving the history of the League.
We’re again asking if you have any photos, documents, banners or other material we might be able to use.
Please spread the word to your members, and please feel free to call or e-mail if you have any questions or any material you'd like to send us. Our thanks to those Leagues that have already responded.
Can You Help Us Find Items to Auction?
As a kick-off to our 90th-Anniversary celebrations, we’re going to do an on-line auction, and we’re asking local Leagues to help us find gift certificates and services to offer. We’re looking for things like gift certificates to restaurants and stores, and services like spa days. It will mean going to your area’s shops and malls and asking the stores for donations, all of which will entitle them to tax deductions for the full value of their gifts. If you take part, your League will get 15% of each successful (i.e., highest) bid on any of the items you provide. Further details will be sent to all local leagues at the end of August.
Election Laws Study Study Reminder
As you all know by now, Convention delegates voted to undertake a new state study on campaign-related issues. The study will be chaired by Christine Horrigan and will cover: 1) procedures for certifying candidates for inclusion on the ballot, 2) the state election calendar timelines and 3) the examination of the methods for filling US senate vacancies.
Study group membership is open to any interested League member. If you’d like to be on the study committee, please contact Christine Horrigan or Jean Rabinow. The committee will begin meeting in September
Public Issues Team Report by Cheryl Dunson, Karen Burnaska, Christine Horrigan, Naomi Schiff Myers and the Public Issues Team Specialists
We await the outcome of budget negotiations which will determine the status of the many proposals we worked on during the legislative session. We will update the outcomes on Action Page of our website once the budget is approved.
Membership Dues Envelopes Available
The LWVCT’s Hamden office has a supply of dues renewal envelopes that your League can use now that the new membership year has started. The envelopes cost 16¢ each, and we can ship them to you via USPS at cost plus postage and packaging. Call 203-288-7996 or e-mail lwvct@lwvct.org if you need a supply.
Working With the Membership Database
If you need help updating your League’s roster of officers or entering new members’ names into the LWVUS database, call or e-mail the LWVCT office. We’ll be glad to help. If you’re already experienced in using the US database, just drop Jean Rabinow an e-mail note when you make changes to your roster, so that we can keep the LWVCT database updated to match your local and LWVUS data.
