IT’S TIME TO TURN UP THE VOLUME!
TELL YOUR LEGISLATORS YOU SUPPORT FIXING AND FUNDING THE CITIZENS’ ELECTION PROGRAM
Last week, Common Cause released a Zogby International poll showing that Connecticut voters overwhelmingly support public financing of campaigns.*
· 79% of respondents supported the Citizens’ Election Program, Connecticut’s public financing program. · 58% supported having the legislature and Governor make changes to the program to address constitutional concerns raised by a district court ruling so that the program can be used in 2010 elections. · 68% of respondents agreed the state needs the Citizens’ Election Program because of past corruption scandals, while only 21% said the state can’t afford the Citizens’ Election Program because of the state deficit.
Despite these findings, some legislators still say that they aren’t hearing from voters and advocates that the Citizens’ Election Program is important to our state. It’s time to turn up the volume.
Please contact your legislators before the legislative session starts on Wednesday, February 3, and tell them:
· You support public financing of campaigns. · You oppose any further funding cuts to the Citizens’ Election Program. · You want them to “fix” the Citizens’ Election Program NOW!
This isn’t about pitting one program (bumper stickers) against another program (diapers). It’s about what happens after your legislators are elected. Do you want them representing the public interest or the moneyed interests that contributed to their campaigns? Please contact your legislators today!
