LWVCT Supports Development of Transportation System

Since 1975, the League of Women Voters of Connecticut has supported the development of a transportation system for Connecticut that is balanced, coordinated, interlocking and multimodal. The league's 2,500 statewide members have designated transportation as a legislative priority for 2006 and 2007. We believe that the principal goal of any transportation policy must be the reduction of all vehicular traffic on state roads, especially the interstates.

On January 31, the league supported bills proposing the re- introduction of toll on Connecticut's highways as part of comprehensive plans to reduce highway congestion by influencing users to turn to alternative modes of transportation.

Today, we wish to support several bills relating to the improvements in the service on the Norwalk-Danbury railroad (HB
 6452), increasing the capacity, frequency and connectivity of bus transit (HB 6373), the implementation of the next phase of
 comprehensive infrastructure improvements (HB 6366), and other similar bills that call for additional transportation investments for alleviating traffic congestion and encourage the use of public transit (HB 6475 and HB 6939). We also support SB 438 to extend the weigh station hours to remove unsafe trucks from our highways.

 The League continues to support:
 * Expansion of schedules, capacity and incentives for intrastate mass transit usage;
 * Expansion of freight traffic on existing lines by way of improved scheduling;
 * Giving priority to maintenance of highways and bridges over new construction;
 * Expanding efforts to promote safety on Connecticut's highways.

 League members across the state appreciate your commitment to this issue, critical to the economic health of Connecticut and its residents. We look forward to an early passage of this legislation.

 Thank you.
