******URGENT******
TELL YOUR LEGISLATORS TO SUPPORT COMPREHENSIVE SEX EDUCATION BILL HB5591 AN ACT CONCERNING HEALTHY TEENS
Urge your legislator to support An Act Concerning Healthy Teens (HB 5591). The Healthy Teens Act is a comprehensive sex education bill, which has passed in the Education Committee and Appropriations Committee, and the House will vote on it next. Call and email your legislator and ask him/her to support the Healthy Teens Act and to keep the $500,000 in the budget that has been set aside for Healthy Teen Act grants to local school districts to offer comprehensive, medically accurate sex education!
The Healthy Teens Act will ensure that Connecticut's youth have access to medically accurate, age-appropriate sex education providing them with the necessary skills to make safe and responsible choices surrounding their sexual health. This bill requires the State Board of Education to expand its family life education curriculum guides for school districts to cover ways to prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STD). By law, the guides must already cover family planning (but not abortion as an alternative); human sexuality; parenting; nutrition; and the emotional, physical, psychological, hygienic, economic, and social aspects of family life. This bill is important because teens are not informed about (STD) prevention and the incidence of STD in teens is increasing. The American Social Health Association's report that 1 in 4 teens contracts a STD regrettably proves the point. Please contact your legislators today and urge them to support the Healthy Teens Act
