“Compassionate Care” Bill Update from our Coalition Partner 4/16/07
Latest Compassionate Care for Rape Victims Legislative Update: Provided by Gretchen Raffa, Community Organizer of Planned Parenthood of CT This past Tuesday, lawmakers held a press conference facilitated by Senator Jonathan Harris (SD 5). The intent was to inform the press about the ongoing negotiations and the effort to find a solution and to present their amendment which sets the standard of care for the provision of emergency contraception to be delivered by the hospital staff or a third party independent provider (nurse, doctor, physician assistant, advanced practice nurse) who would perform the sexual assault forensic exam and offer and provide onsite EC. On Wednesday we had another success with our bill. The Senate voted in favor of our "third party" amendment on the Compassionate Care bill! EC bill Procedurally, the Senate took up the amendment, passed it on a voice vote and then immediately referred it to the Public Health Committee where the chairs of that committee have publicly stated that it will be taken up as soon as they get it. The bill will then go back to the Senate for final action on the amended bill and then to the House for the final vote. We are thrilled at yesterday’s action by the Senate but it doesn’t mean our fight is over; we still have a lot of work to do to get this bill passed. We still need everyone to continue to show their support including coming to the Capitol on Wednesday, April 25th from 10-2pm for our Compassionate Care for Rape Victims Lobby Day & Rally. If anyone in the Hartford area can spare some time or can stop by the rally at noon your support would be greatly appreciated. I have attached our flyer (also its Word Version) so please print and post in your health center/office. Please spread the word to your family and friends and ask them to join us as well…the more people, the more power we have! |
