Support
for No. 685, "An Act Concerning Compassionate Care For Victims Of Sexual
Assault"
Dear Senators
and Representatives:
The League of
Women Voters of Connecticut strongly supports the proposed bill No. 685, "AN
ACT CONCERNING COMPASSIONATE CARE FOR VICTIMS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT" Be it
enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives: That title 19a of
the general statutes be amended to require each licensed health care
facility in this state that provides emergency medical services to follow
the medical standard of care for treating victims of sexual assault, which
shall include offering and dispensing emergency contraception on the
premises of the licensed health care facility, with the acquiescence of the
victim.
We believe that
girls and women who have been raped deserve compassionate care, which
includes offering emergency contraception as soon as possible after the rape
occurred. Each licensed health care facility in Connecticut that provides
emergency medical services should be required to offer emergency
contraception.
Please pass
this very important legislation.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Jara Burnett,
President
