Take Action to Increase Supply of Affordable Housing

Contact your legislators TODAY and ask them to support SB 1057 (File # 720) - An Act Concerning Housing for Economic Growth.

We need your help NOW to ensure that HOMEConnecticut's legislative proposal to increase the supply of affordable housing in Connecticut is passed this legislative session.  By taking just a moment to send an email, you can make a huge difference in keeping affordable housing a top priority issue for legislators at this critical stage.   

Connecticut needs to create more affordable and modest, market-rate housing to retain and attract young people, workers and businesses to our state.  SB 1057 promotes housing development through the use of municipal incentives, technical assistance and project based rental subsidies.  

The bill has been approved by five committees of the General Assembly: Select Committee on Housing, Planning & Development, Commerce, Finance, Revenue and Bonding and Appropriations.  It will be considered next by the Senate and then by the House of Representatives.  

NOW is the time to ask your State Representative and State Senator to make SB 1057 a priority for passage this session.  Tell them that you enthusiastically support HOMEConnecticut's proposal and that they should too.

The HOMEConnecticut proposal:

• Will help create 60,000 units of modest and affordable housing units over 15 years.

• Provides incentives to towns that voluntarily create zoning that allows for mixed-income housing.  These incentives include reimbursement for any additional school costs from children living in the new housing units.

• Provides technical assistance funding for non-profit developers and for municipalities to create such zones.

• Includes incentives (through project-based subsidies) for developers to create rental housing for households below 50% of the area median income.

• Pays for itself by keeping workers and jobs in Connecticut.  In addition, for every $1 it invests in this plan, the State will gain over $2 in revenue.
