May 5 Rally at the Capitol March 21 2007 CONNECTICUT HEALTH CARE DEBATE: MOMENTUM BUILDS FOR UNIVERSAL SOLUTION From committee hearings at the Capitol to community forums across the state, the health care debate in Connecticut is gaining momentum. As health care costs continue to soar and more businesses seek alternatives to the current employer-sponsored system, the need for a sustainable health plan grows increasingly apparent. To read more on the declining employer-sponsored system, click on "Health Care by Loop Hole", the lead editorial in the March, 2007 AARP Bulletin. Two separate bills approved last week by the Insurance Committee and the Labor Committee offer viable solutions. If approved, a bill pending in the Public Health Committee would offer yet a third vehicle for affordable health care in the state. All three plans draw from the research models and data that the Foundation has made available to legislators and the public. The demand for comprehensive change in Connecticut is growing. For the state to truly find the best way to improve the quality of health care, reduce cost and increase access to care for every resident of the state, all ideas must be kept on the table. FACTS As the rhetoric heats up in the health care debate, it's important to learn the facts. Fact #1: Because a single-payer system is so much less costly than the present system, it would save businesses and households roughly $1.2 billion they currently spend to purchase health insurance. Research shows that such a self-administered health plan serving all state residents would add 6,000 to 11,000 jobs to the state's economy. Fact #2: Because health care costs under a single-payer system would be so much lower for Connecticut employers than in other states, it would make it easier to persuade companies to locate in Connecticut, adding even more jobs to the state's economy. Fact #3: Under a single-payer system, insurers would still pay claims, credential providers, and manage chronic illness. Just like other employers that cover their workers today, insurance companies located in Connecticut would save money on health care costs. That would make it more attractive, not less, for them to stay in Connecticut. What: Rally for quality, affordable health care for everyone.
