LWVCT Urges Appropriations Committee to Support EDR provision in SB1312 4/27/07

Dear Senator Harp, Representative Merrill and Members of the Appropriations Committee:
The League of Women Voters of Connecticut urges you to support the Election Day Registration provisions in SB 1312, which is currently before the Appropriations Committee.
The League believes that the arguments for Election Day Registration—increased voter turnout, greater candidate outreach, little or no fraud, and more efficient election procedures—are compelling.
§ EDR significantly increases voter turnout, even in off year elections. Some of the most dramatic increases are among young people and people who move frequently.
§ Experiences in New Hampshire and Maine, both EDR states, have shown that the risks of double voting and other forms of voter fraud due to EDR are small to non-existent. The EDR provision under consideration in SB 1312 would provide even more safeguards against voter fraud than currently exist in those states.
§ The state-wide centralized voter registration database is fully functional and provides the tools necessary to cross-check voter registrations, making this an ideal time to implement Election Day Registration.
