CGA TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE Public Hearing February 26, 2007 Support for: HB 5316, AA Concerning Sales Tax Exemptions for Fuel Efficient Motor Vehicles Comments by Naomi Schiff Myers, Air Quality Specialist
The League of Women Voters of Connecticut supports measures to promote an environment that is beneficial to life and promotes the reduction of vehicular pollution.
The League supports the use of financial incentives to promote energy efficiency and conservation and urges your support for HB 5316 which will extend the sales tax exemption on hybrid vehicles to all motor vehicles that achieve forty miles per gallon in either highway or city driving. Connecticut suffers from some of the worst air quality in the country. Exhaust from motor vehicles is a major source of respiratory and other health problems. Each gallon of gasoline that is burned produces nearly 20 pounds of carbon dioxide, the main contributor to global warming. It makes sense to financially reward consumers for choosing vehicles that utilize existing technologies to substantially reduce carbon dioxide pollution emissions.
HB 5316 will encourage the purchase of automobiles that are more energy efficient and therefore more climate-friendly. Providing a new tax incentive to consumers for the purchase of cleaner cars should help spur sales of fuel-efficient vehicles and will therefore encourage the automobile industry to produce more energy efficient automobiles. Purchasing more fuel-efficient vehicles will not only result in less carbon dioxide in the air we breathe and better fuel economy, but it will also help reduce our dependence on oil.
The League of Women Voters of Connecticut urges your support for HB 5316.
Thank you for this opportunity to provide input.
