Subject: Support Raised Bill No.123 AA Concerning the Idling of Motor Vehicles
The League of Women Voters of Connecticut urges you to support Raised Bill No. 123 AA Concerning the Idling of Motor Vehicles. RB 123 prohibits the idling of motor vehicles for more than three consecutive minutes except for certain exempted purposes. It provides an enforcement mechanism for the current no-idling law and therefore will be a major step forward towards reducing vehicular pollution. By making unnecessary idling an infraction, the public will become aware that there is a law that prohibits idling.
The League of Women Voters supports measures to increase energy efficiency and reduce pollution, especially measures that promote an environment beneficial to life. Exhaust from motor vehicles is a major source of respiratory and other health problems. Connecticut suffers from some of the worst air quality in the country. Each gallon of gasoline that is burned produces nearly 20 pounds of carbon dioxide, the main contributor to global warming/climate change. The League believes that global climate change is one of the most serious threats to the environment, health and economy of our nation.
We were disappointed that a bill that incorporated similar suggestions never reached the General Assembly last year. We are hopeful that RB 123 will come to a vote this year and we urge your strong support for a reasonable bill that will significantly reduce unnecessary toxic emissions into our environment.
