League Activities and Studies
Meetings
The time and location of meetings is varied in order to accommodate all
members. They are usually
held weekday evenings or on Saturdays, though some committee work is
done during the day. General
At least four general membership meetings are held each year.
They include:
Voters Service
The League has a comprehensive voters service program.
We help register voters, sponsor a voter registration forum at
Canton High School each year, provide voter information, sponsor
candidate forums where the public can question local and state
candidates and we publish a voter’s guide which lists the issues and
priorities favored by each candidate. Study Committees
Study committees establish their own meeting times and frequencies. Among the studies the Canton League has conducted are: Land Use, Town Charter, Inland-Wetlands, Declining High School Enrollment, Parks and Recreation, Plan of Development, Library Facilities, Water Supply, Police Regionalization, and Social Services. These topics were studied in depth and the League holds a position on them. League PositionsNew study items are recommended and discussed at our
annual Program Planning Breakfast in February.
Any member may recommend an item for study at any level (local,
state, or national). Our
Board of Directors then votes to recommend items to the membership and
members vote, at the Annual Meeting in the spring, on which item to
pursue. Delegates from the local League vote at State and National
Conventions for program items at those levels. A study committee determines the scope of the
study, researches background information, meets with community experts
and educates the members. Then
a consensus meeting is held where all members are presented with the
information gathered and are encouraged to discuss the issue.
The Board formulates a statement of position based on member
agreement at the consensus meeting. Action
The League may act on its positions by monitoring
and lobbying officials, educating the public, forming coalitions and/or
litigating. |
