LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF BROOKFIELD
Scholarship Topic Question – 2008
Please use a separate piece of paper for your essay. Responses should be approximately 300 words.
Of Brookfield’s approximately 16,000 residents, currently just over 9,000 residents are registered to vote.
In most local elections, at which town officials are elected, and at the annual budget referendum, at which residents vote for or against school and town budgets, fewer than 30% of registered voters actually vote.
Do you think it’s important for Brookfield residents to vote on local issues? Why or why not?
How can the League of Women Voters make exercising their right and privilege to vote a priority for Brookfield residents? Who else should take responsibility for getting residents to register and vote? The Town? What ideas do you have that might increase the percentage of residents voting in local elections and at local referendums?
